Centrus Energy Corp.

About

Centrus Energy Corp. is the world’s most diversified supplier of enriched uranium fuel. Drawing upon long-term supply agreements with primary producers, purchases from secondary sources, and inventory, Centrus is continuing its nearly 60-year record of providing utility customers with assured, affordable, and on-time deliveries.

Centrus is a leader in advanced enrichment technologies. For decades, Centrus – which has roots tracing back to the Manhattan Project – has been deeply involved in national defense applications for enriched uranium and nuclear fuels. Centrus has developed the world’s most productive enrichment technology, the American Centrifuge, which is the only deployment-ready centrifuge available to meet the nation’s long-term national security needs for enriched uranium products.

An October 2015 report by the U.S. Department of Energy found that the American Centrifuge is the “most technically advanced and lowest risk option” to meet national security needs.  Centrus is now deploying 16 of these advanced centrifuges in Piketon, Ohio to demonstrate the production of High-Assay, Low-Enriched Uranium (HALEU), a next-generation nuclear fuel required by a number of advanced reactor designs that are now under consideration for commercial use. HALEU will also be needed for the micro-reactors being developed and demonstrated by the Department of Defense, for both fixed-site and mobile applications.

While current market conditions do not support building a full-scale uranium enrichment plant for purely commercial purposes, over the long term the United States will need to deploy a domestic enrichment technology at industrial scale for many reasons – including providing a fuel source for advanced reactors, strengthening energy security, advancing U.S. nonproliferation goals, providing fuel for the long-term needs of the nuclear Navy, and ensuring a supply of tritium which is needed to maintain the effectiveness of America’s nuclear deterrent.  Centrus stands ready to provide these essential services to the nuclear industry and the nation.
